Located at 207 Main Street, Lafleche
The Lafleche and District Museum is located on the Main Street of Lafleche. The building was originally the administration office at the R.C.A.F. Station at Mossbank, having later been purchased by Wood River School Unit for their office in Lafleche. In 1990 it was acquired for the purpose of setting up a museum.
Our museum shows the history of the Rural Municipality of Wood River No. 74 -- the land that lured our forefathers into coming here to settle in the early 1900's.
Visitors to our museum get a historical look at maps of settlements areas; the pole trail that settlers followed; early farming practices - as shown by a mural done by a local artist; the blacksmith ship with tools and equipment used by pioneers in the early days.
Tools, fragments and projectile points used by ancient hunters which have been found in our area are housed in the museum.
The wedding dress and trousseau of an early prairie bride, as she was carried over the threshold of a soddie introduces us to the exhibit areas depicting the various rooms in a pioneer home; we have a pioneer kitchen, parlor, bedroom, music room, and back porch. These exhibits contain unique artifacts that once belonged to the early settlers from our area.
With the settlement of the area came the general store, banking services, pharmacy, a place of worship, bowling, and horse racing.
In our military display are uniforms and artifacts from Pre-WW1, WW1, WW2 and the Korean War.
Pictures and a map of the North West Mounted Police, and tunics and boots of present day Royal Canadian Mounted Police are on display.
Our library contains much of the history of our community in the form of maps, picture albums, history book, family histories, school yearbooks, music festival material, old timers stories, death notices, scrap books, Thomson Lake history, etc.
In our office, we have available for sale, gifts and souvenirs of our museum and area.
